How GPS Systems Work

The acronym GPS denotes the full meaning of the Global Positioning System which happens to be a technical spectacle that is essentially made possible with the use of a number of satellites found in the earths orbit which transmit signals that are precise hence enabling receivers for this GPS to evaluate and display information on locations that are accurate, the time and the speed to a user. This GPS system contains 24 satellites that operate and some several spares. A few of these spare satellites may also be in use or may be activated also in the instance that an operating satellite has become dysfunctional. When looking at the specifics of this many satellites in the orbit, a person who is observing may be able to view four satellites from any particular location and at any particular time on this earth. So, a lot of people have been wondering how before the advent of this system, people found their way around the globe. They did actually find their way but it was not easy.

A GPS system receives signals from the many satellites that are about 31 in number, and the receivers can be able to locate a certain position using a mathematical principle of trilateration. This method is a three-dimensional space that is used more or less depending on the speed and accuracy of positioning that the user may be desire. Most people have got the GPS receiver fitted into their vehicle but do not actually know how it works. They are only concerned with how it will help them get to a particular destination. These systems work by determining the location of the receiver with three coordinates like height, longitude and latitude, in which a person can write the three equations readily that relate to the three distance observation to the satellites’ coordinates that are known and those unknown coordinates of the receiver. The three equations can be able to be solved for these three unknowns. This described solution is commonly called the navigation solution. Virtually all receivers implement these calculation types that include inexpensive devices which are handheld.

The GPS system was initially created by the U.S. for the United States Department of Defense, the DOD, as an application to be used by the military. It had been widely used and was active in the military in the early 80s, but was initiated to be used by civilians in the late 90s. Since then, systems that are consumer based have become a multi-billion dollar industry that has an assortment of varied products available to civilians, internet-based utilities and services. This system works well in any type of weather condition, night or day anywhere around the world and at any given time. For the receiving of GPS signals, there is no subscription fee. These signals can be blocked by canyon walls, dense forests and even skyscrapers and have a weak ability to penetrate indoor spaces, which then translates to the GPS navigation not being accurate in certain areas.

GPS Tracking System

GPS tracking system is generally used for determining the precise location of a person or vehicle with the help of global positioning system. The location of the vehicle or person can be recorded at regular interval and is either stored in the tracking unit or transmitted to an internet connected computer or to a centrally located database. This has been possible due to satellite, radio or cellular modem that is embedded in the unit. GPS tracking system is a network of satellites orbiting the earth, which transmit location data back to earth incessantly. GPS tracking system can be used to locate any object on the earth. The main use of GPS tracking system is to find out the location, to provide navigation information for ships and planes and it also helps in creating maps and models of everything in the planet.

The working pattern of GPS tracking system is quite simple - 24 satellites orbiting our earth are used for the GPS technology. Each satellite transmits radio signals which can be received by GPS receivers to determine location, speed and direction. Once these satellite transmissions are received by the GPS receiver, location and other information such as speed and direction can be calculated. A GPS receiver needs to receive transmissions from at least three or more GPS satellites to calculate position of anything quite effectively. GPS receivers usually measure the time delays between the transmission and reception of each of the satellites GPS radio signal. There is no doubt that that the GPS tracking system makes travel easy, free of worries and thoroughly enjoyable.

GPS tracking system not only lets to know the exact location of any object, but this device can also maintain the time duration for which the object remains stationary and the velocity with which the object is moving. This device is extremely helpful for the tracking of vehicles, fleets, assets, and other valuable objects. Its growing popularity and increase in the number of usage has made the device easily accessible for small organizations and individuals. Small organizations are using this device to monitor their employees and assets. The device which was once used by corporate houses is now within the reach of many.

GPS tracking system not only offers safety, but also helps a person to drive more efficiently, which further helps to economize fuel expenditure. Moreover, one can save time by reaching the destination earlier as he is guided of the correct route and path. The individual also gets benefit from this system in the form of reduced auto insurance policy cost. In fact, installation of the GPS tracking system in a vehicle reduces the cost of auto insurance premium. It is also used in a number of other activities like camping and hiking, not to forget to mention its impeccable statistical analysis delivered to operators in terms of location, speed, direction and other information.

Tips on Traveling With a GPS

All this high tech all around us are claiming easy learning curves. But there's really no reason why the family needs to find itself stuck in a strange territory just because there was no one to ask which was the correct way. Neither is it sensible wasting precious family time stuck in slow traffic just because there was no way of knowing this freeway is clogged. Car GPS are a fascinating work of years of research for in-car use; naturally, it’s just as practical and valuable too when on used by travelers on foot. GPS devices are something to count on especially when laying out plans for a trip, and there is no difference whether what you have in mind is a cross-country trek or a hopscotch tour of your routine stops.

But car GPS is really capable of getting you from point A to point B with least possible hassle, it also spruces up your holiday, helping you to think of more important things and letting it find for you the best, say, restaurants, or how best to get to somebody's place and still being able to gas up along the way.

Check out these car GPS travel tips to enable you to have the most out of the holiday season and skirt the travel blues.

1. If you think you will end up counting a lot on your car GPS unit, take time to tutor yourself how to use it before needing it. Take out the sedate technical booklets, and get comfy knowing what way points are (these are like the electronic “dots” on the map that you have to “connect” in order to get from your starting place to another). This measure of prudence will surely shave away tense moments on the road and prevent you from making horrible mistakes like loading incorrect information into an otherwise intelligent device.

2. Check that there are maps in your car GPS before stepping on the gas. Why not browse through them and test them just to double check? Are you also knowledgeable about the route calculation configuration of your gadget? You ought to be able to answer yes.

3. Power is an issue that cannot be underestimated. All GPS models require recharging from time to time. Ensure that you got extra batteries for the duration of the trip or have packed a universal adapter in your belongings. Battery life of GPS devices vary, and the best way to allow no loopholes is to get yourself a cigarette lighter charger.

4. Almost everybody knows the various dangers invited by a car GPS left hanging on the windshield in a hot car (or even if its just a mount, for states that allow people to do so) for long periods of time. If the heat doesn't destroy it, thieves may still get to it. Avoid making this a habit as soon as possible.

5. Most car navigation systems have a massive POI database on restaurants along your major highway. Pick the cuisine you are after and your car GPS will show results by degree of proximity. Screen out those that are not part of your route and the next time, your forward seeking food radar will refresh faster.

6. Some car GPS devices also double as some sort of Lonely Planet travel guide, containing some helpful travel advice which may prove to be the crucial advice you need when dealing with the locals, or trying to find out the right way to drive in that place. Stay sharp with your car GPS!

Navigating Your Way With GPS

Global Positioning System commonly known as the GPS is becoming increasingly indispensable for some people that need it for different reasons. Among the common reasons why people buy GPS devices is to help them navigate. It is thus advisable for prospective consumers to be familiar with the varied systems available in the market, in order to make informed choices. Among the types of GPS devices that many consumers are scrambling for are the handheld GPS. These are basically portable navigational systems. They consist of cell phones. Cell phones are phones one can carry very where with them. Tracking devices also come under hand held GPS and are used to track cars, people and so on. Another handheld device which is common among people who deal with these devices is the PDA. These are like small notebooks and many people use them to note or record things in them. The multipurpose device, the most popular one, can be used on foot and in multiple cars as well.
Many multipurpose GPS units have maps in full color viewable in 3D or 2D views. Another feature of these devices is a windshield/ dashboard mounting arm which is removable for mounting purposes. Other features of multipurpose devices are traffic warnings, touch-screen interface, walking/ car/ biking car settings and multimedia extras. Apart from portability, handheld devices are also convenient. Hand held devices differ in terms of performance, features and mapping services. A number of handhelds provide their users with just longitude and latitude coordinates, while others offer 3D maps in full-color with directions that are voice guided. The In-Dash GPS device which other people call in-car GPS is another type pf GPS device that consumer need to familiarize themselves with. Unlike the devices which can be held in hand, a consumer cannot carry this unit around or move it from one car to another car.

GPS unit is usually done on the dash boards. This therefore makes it useful for that particular car. New cars often have factory installed optional in-dash systems and car owners can buy those ones or buy a car then have it installed with an aftermarket unit. People who like boating find Fish Finders or Marine GPS very useful. The purposes of this type of unit is to locate things in water and to track the course the user desires. Fishing vessels find the unit indispensable as Fish finders make use of the sonar technology to look into the water underneath the boat so that they can be able to locate sunken objects or fish. A number of marine GPS systems have GPS capabilities as well as fish finder abilities. Due to its dual purposes, the unit is becoming very popular. The prices of this device vary just like those of the handheld devices. The determining factors are abilities of the device and the features of the device. Some of the GPS systems are portable and people can use them when they go ice fishing as they combine Sonar technology and GPS technology.
